Matt roasting on the 15 kilo Has Garanti Roaster

We are a small, family-owned and operated coffee roasting company, located in Kent Washington, established in 2010! In 2009, our family kept trying to meet up at coffee shops in South King County to talk about what kind of business we were interested in starting. At this point, Matt had worked in the coffee industry for about 10 years: roasting, managing, training, delivering and spending many years as a barista. At every meeting, we walked away thinking that the coffee should have been better. We realized that in South King County, there was a lack of quality roasters. We decided to move toward improving the coffee quality of this area. Our family has lived in this area for many years (mostly in Covington).

We embarked on this journey with two goals in mind: 1) to roast quality coffee and 2) to enjoy the time we could spend together as a family. These are the things we knew we could control, and if we were able to achieve these things, we would consider this a success. It was tough to navigate starting a business without having tried your end product first, and finding the right roasting equipment was even more difficult. There are a lot of great roasters out there, but when you’re just starting out, you’re kind of on a budget. We landed on a 15 kilo (about 33 lb) roaster that was made in Turkey. Matt learned how to roast on a Diedrich and was quite worried about the switch. The first year of our existence was mostly learning the roaster, deciding on the varieties of coffee we wanted to produce, and learning the coffee that consumers in this area wanted. We have since hit our stride, feel great about the quality of coffee we produce and stand behind it!

One of the things that we really set out to do is be a little different than most other roasters out there. It may have been because of our starting capitol or it may have been the inner “Kent” oozing out. We didn’t want to be the same fancy, uppity-style roaster that we’ve seen a hundred times. We landed on more of an 80’s style vibe with bright colors and named our blends after things from Matt’s childhood. The name came from a dream that Matt had and it worked perfectly with what we were trying to accomplish. Matt’s brother then created the logo (which he hates). That contributed to our “just go with it” attitude that we have continued to carry as we have grown over the years. We want to help you improve your coffee quality without making you feel bad about it. You can read more about our coffee philosophy here.

Years later, we are still in the same building in Kent and we have expanded to many areas of business. Since we are such small company, that gives us the ability to be flexible and offer services that a lot of larger roasters can’t (or don’t) offer. Our mantra is to provide good quality coffee, a fair price and outstanding customer service. We offer retail, wholesale, office supply, specialty packaging, fundraising and everything in between. Feel free to get a hold of us at any time for any of your coffee needs. Or come visit our tasting room to try any of our beans.
